A boar in long grass
Monday, 12 May 2014
Back at the cruiser after yesterday's twenty kilometers. A quick lunch, then east. Late afternoon, a big boar with his sow in tall grass. The bushmen were out of meat again. Four hundred meters in I could see only a blurred grey shape through the Swarovski — Felix said it was his head, staring at us. A single shot.
Back at the cruiser by five past one from yesterday’s line. A quick lunch. Then east. Along the way, bull tracks from last night — all decent sizes.
Late in the afternoon a big boar and his sow, both heads down in tall grass. The bushmen were out of meat again. We stopped and went downwind.

Four hundred meters in and I could see only a small blurry grey shape through the Z6i — even with the sun at our backs. Felix whispered it was the boar’s head, staring at us. I aimed at the top centre of the blur, through the grass, and at the shot he went down.

Walking up to him the sow broke to our right and went. The boar had a big fat body, tusks normal. The bushmen were happy.
A twenty-nine-inch blue wildebeest bull about five hundred meters from camp before we left. The west pan road, and a fresh old-bull spoor — the trackers said it was the seventy-pound bull from two days ago. Cows and calves further along. North then east along the park boundary road. Plains game, young bulls. South toward Tsumkwe; heavy sign, including yesterday’s three big bulls, but all too late in the day. The afternoon in the south looking for sign. Not much to find.
